FOR THE RISK OF FIRE
Keep your ember secret. Those words have stuck with twenty-one-year-old pyrcaster, Ellie Carlyle, for the last sixteen years. The last person with fire magic, she’s being hunted by the Cult of Aphria for her magic. Together with Grey, her charismatic best friend who saved her life and broke her heart, and Lyrick, her thoughtful confidant with sight-borrowing magic, they survive on the streets with other orphaned kids. Life is difficult, but relatively safe.
That is, until Ellie’s arrested and carted off to the capitol where the Triumvirate rules.
There, she reconnects with a long-lost friend and prince of the realm, Zathrian. He takes her to the realm’s oracle to learn about her parents, but the oracle has a different message for Ellie: two prophecies. The first, warning of the cult, is the same prophecy her parents learned prior to sending her away. The second states she must merge with a long-dead fire goddess Sulien, or risk the realm being razed by the century-old disciple responsible for Sulien’s death.
Despite being hunted by Cultists, fighting constant threats, and navigating multiple complicated relationships, Ellie and her friends must travel across the realm to Sulien’s Rest. Along the way, they learn more about Ellie’s magic, just how deep the Cult’s influence is, and that she truly is able to be loved.
Facing monsters, ancient pyrcasters, and heartbreaking betrayals, Ellie must decide exactly what she’s willing to risk: her fire or her life.
